Has food production had a negative impact on the biome? If so, how has the biome changed?
Due to fur and food hunting, many native animals such as polar-bears, the arctic fox and Eskimo-Curlew have become endangered and are struggling to survive. Apart from hunting, there is not substantial amount of farming that goes ahead in tundra areas. This is because of lack of human coordinated food production around the area, and is the biome has hardly been affected as a consequence.
This is not to say that humans do not ruin the tundra biome at all though. Despite the fact that there are no large populations living among Tundra, a major threat is still posed. Located below the tundra are many different natural resources such as rich oils and gases which humans use to their advantage. These resources are drilled from the ground and used for however, on the 24th of March, 1989 there was a massive disaster which leaked 4,200 of gallons of Alaska's oil into the ocean. Roughly 100,000 birds and fish were killed as a consequence.
Global Warming is also causing negative affects on the tundra. It unbalances the natural systems; as the earth warms, tundra begins to melt and slowly progresses into a smaller and smaller state. It has the potential to ruin habitats, thus is a major threat to tundra wildlife.
